CVD zinc selenide (ZnSe) is a chemically inert material, It has good characteristics of wide transmission band (0.5μm-22μm), high purity, low absorption coefficient, high resistance to thermal shock, refractive index uniformity and consistency, so ZnSe Material is widely used in thermal imaging systems, medicine, industrial thermal radiation measuring instruments, infrared spectrometers, and high-power CO2 laser optics .

Compared to other optical materials used for infrared light, such as germanium or silicon (silicon), the ZnSe window allows some visible light to be transmitted, making it easier to adjust (align) the optical axis of the infrared laser system and allow the use of more convenient and less expensive He-Ne lasers. However, because zinc selenide is a soft material that is easy to be scratched, it is not suitable for use in harsh working conditions (Knoop hardness is only 120), and because it is a toxic substance, it is necessary to always wear rubber or plastic gloves when handling zinc selenide lenses to avoid injury.
